Emergency Phone Numbers

It can be pretty scary if some sort of accident happens to you in a foreign land, especially when nobody there speaks your language. It's important that you get yourself prepared for such situations before you go to China.

The speed of reaction to emergencies in China can vary from area to area, and there are no particular patterns to define it. If the emergency department that you call is busy at that moment, they will take some time before they can attend to your problem. Even in places that are not so busy, for instance in the rural areas, the reaction can also be slow, but that is more a matter of lackadaisical attitude.

One of the most important emergency numbers is for medical emergencies. At anytime that you encounter an accident that requires immediate treatment, call for medical assistance. The Chinese are quite efficient when it comes to life-saving matters, and they usually get there in good time, especially if you are a foreigner. But only call the medical emergency when it is absolutely necessary.

The police department is another more popular number for foreigners. Although the crime rate is very low in China, recently there are a little more crimes committed against foreigners. If it should happen to you that you are assaulted or robbed, don't hesitate to call the police department, especially if you have lost your passport. Along with the local police number, also find out about the phone number of your country's embassy. Nowadays, there are English-speaking operators in the local police departments of larger towns (or towns where foreigners frequent) to handle foreigners' emergencies.

You should also know the emergency number for the fire department, just in case you are locked in a building or for worse, caught in fire. The fire department is rather efficient compared to other emergency departments.

Also, if you lost your way or need to know the directions around the area you are in, you can call the traffic department. This department is especially useful for foreigners who are driving around China. In case of car troubles, you can get assistance immediately.

Here’s a list of useful phone numbers. These numbers should work in most places throughout China. Don't forget to also find out the phone number of your home country’s Embassy in China.
