Wudang 8 Diagram
The 8 Diagram system is the outcome of ancient Chinese wisdom and intelligence. It comprises the philosophy of Yin and Yang of Daoism, Tai Ji, and the 5 Elements. Ba Gua Zhang is based on the changes in Yin and Yang, the interaction among the 5 Elements. Its steps follow the 4 directions (North, South, East, and West) and the 4 oblique directions plus circular movements. Ba Gua Zhang was originated from the brothers in the Bì family. Its moves are primarily with the palm and are circular. Its characteristics are swift, reacting to changes, combining soft and hard, and continuing without pause . In fighting application, there are many body movements. It has been described as flying like a dragon, guarding like an ape, crouching like a tiger, and circling like an eagle. Through its basic training, one would develop flexibility, speed and stamina. The strength of lower limbs would be greatly enhanced.
Traditional Ba Gua Zhang is also known as the mother of Ba Gua Zhang. It is the most traditional pattern. At the beginning, 8 basic stances would be practiced, followed by moving in a circle with palm moves. The last stage is palming the wooden dummy. The emphasis of Ba Gua Zhang is swiftness of the body, changing the distance from opponents when circling, and avoiding direct head-on attacks, adopting oblique attack s instead. Attacking when opportunities arise and making the most of using the palm is far more swift and adaptable than the punch/fist combination. The practice of Ba Gua Zhang, in time, helps to achieve good internal power and self-defense techniques.
